Book Summary:

The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West and East Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession for the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. Set on the prosperous Long Island of 1922, The Great Gatsby provides a critical social history of America during the Roaring Twenties within its fictional narrative. That era, known for profound economic prosperity, the development of jazz music flapper culture, new technologies in communication (motion pictures, broadcast radio, recorded music) forging a genuine mass culture; and bootlegging, along with other criminal activity, is plausibly depicted in Fitzgerald's novel. Fitzgerald uses many of these societal developments of the 1920s that were to build Gatsby's stories from many of the simple details like automobiles to broader themes like Fitzgerald's discreet allusions to the organized crime culture which was the source of Gatsby's fortune. Fitzgerald depicts the garish society of the Roaring Twenties by placing the book's plotline within the historical context of the era.

Book Summary:

God has something to say to his daughters. That He will always love them . . . no matter what. In 54:10 author Jada McClintick delivers this message while taking the reader through stories of her own life. Filled with both humor and heartbreak, McClintick makes herself relatable to every woman by the vulnerability and transparency with which she describes some of her choices and mistakes and the lessons she learned, as well as her boldness in her proclamation of faith and her love of God. But the real journey isn’t in the stories themselves but in the conversations that she had with God about those stories. McClintick shares with the reader the verbatim dialog between herself and God as she was experiencing various events in her life as well as reflecting on them later. God’s love is evidenced throughout each conversation and story. His grace and mercy are reflected in the words spoken back and forth between the two. Have you ever wondered what God would say to you? 54:10 urges the reader to have their own dialog with God and displays the ease with which the author communicates with her Heavenly Father. The overarching message of the text comes through clearly as the abundant, overwhelming, never-ending, and unshakable love that God has for his girls.

The Upside of Stress

Book Summary:

The author of The Willpower Instinct delivers a controversial and groundbreaking new book that overturns long-held beliefs about stress. More than forty-four percent of Americans admit to losing sleep over stress. And while most of us do everything we can to reduce it, Stanford psychologist and bestselling author Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., delivers a startling message: Stress isn’t bad. In The Upside of Stress, McGonigal highlights new research indicating that stress can, in fact, make us stronger, smarter, and happier—if we learn how to embrace it. The Upside of Stress is the first book to bring together cutting-edge discoveries on the correlation between resilience—the human capacity for stress-related growth—and mind-set, the power of beliefs to shape reality. As she did in The Willpower Instinct, McGonigal combines science, stories, and exercises into an engaging and practical book that is both entertaining and life-changing, showing you: • how to cultivate a mind-set to embrace stress • how stress can provide focus and energy • how stress can help people connect and strengthen close relationships • why your brain is built to learn from stress, and how to increase its ability to learn from challenging experiences McGonigal’s TED talk on the subject has already received more than 7 million views. Her message resonates with people who know they can’t eliminate the stress in their lives and want to learn to take advantage of it. The Upside of Stress is not a guide to getting rid of stress, but a guide to getting better at stress, by understanding it, embracing it, and using it.

Book Summary:

Today’s reader has choices: books about love, about life, about death – and everything in between. The variety is overwhelming, bewildering. But what if the reader could play a part in producing something different, something about everything, about nothing, about everything and nothing at the same time? What if the reader could tell the writer what to write about? Lev Parikian asked his readers those very questions, gathered their responses and then set out to write that book. Music to Eat Cake By is the result, a collection of essays exploring everything from the art of the sandwich and space travel to how not to cure hiccups and, of course, his beloved birdsong. Lev considers each subject with his signature wit and warmth, inviting the reader to wonder: what might we ask him to write about next?

Forest Prayer

  • Pages : 510
  • Category : Religion

  • File Pdf: forest-prayer.pdf

Book Summary:

Forest Prayer is a conversationally steered and character-driven life story with the protagonist growing up and older while looking for the Lord. Having a few Christian mentors and a few mentors who appear to be agnostic, Jerry struggles his whole life through trying to distinguish between what he often feels is an infestation of Christianity along with what he knows is his infatuation with forestry and his obsession with wildlife management. Thinly disguised as Jerry, I had the following supporting characters: Papa, my grandfather and Baptist preacher who was close to God in more ways than one; Uncle Sawyer, my saw boss who insisted that the cure to all our problems was out there in the woods waiting for us to find; Ol' Professor Starlet, who was the forestry teacher who turns out to know more than we first thought when meeting him; the good Dr. Frank, who is perhaps the world's leading international forester; and Patsy, who is my main confidant still today after over fifty years of awesome marriage. Instead of reading or writing fiction or nonfiction, the fun of this genre that I like to call faction is that we get to enjoy living life over again but doing it better. If you share one of these true-life experiences with me for real and recognize my story is more like the way things should have been, it is. Rather than part of a bucket list, this is part of my to-do list of testimonies for Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. So I ask that those of you who knew me before my life became undergirded with Christianity to please remember that both Colossians and the Lord's Prayer tell us that we are to forgive one another as Christ forgave us. Locations of verses within Bible books are specifically omitted in hopes that it might encourage the reader to spend more personal time in the Good Book for him or herself. As directed by the Holy Bible not to add or take away anything from the Word, I have made that effort to the best of my ability. If I've accidentally missed, added, or misrepresented anything, then I ask that you and God please forgive me. God help me if this causes harm to anyone's faith. Author's liberty includes the following four grammatical variances for the following reasons: #1--incorrect grammar and incorrect spelling are sometimes used to better reflect characters, times, and places. After all, what's not about Christ is about people. #2--italics used all over the place are to emphasize words, phrases, and much more...like out of respect for the various names of God; verses in the Bible; books of the Bible; quotes, whether verbatim or paraphrased; and even sometimes in lieu of quotation marks or for periodic words that rhyme. #3--overuse of ellipsis is because Psalm does say to be still...and it seems the characters in the book often want you to slow down a fraction of a second longer than you might for a mere comma. #4--types or names of trees are capitalized and italicized...as it does take them to make a forest. Other books by Gerald Inmon are Yocona Puff Adder (ISBN 0-9774864-3-5) and Camp Re-Form (ISBN 0-9774864-7-2). First edition books of these two are still available in hardback hard copy by e-mailing to [email protected] or electronically through Amazon Kindle or Barnes and Noble's Book Nook.

Book Summary:

One of my most enjoyable and enlightening experiences was going to lunch with Troy Dungan. Not just any lunch, but the weekly Wednesday Bible study lunches where media folks from the Dallas Morning News and Troys WFAA-TV station would gather to hear Troys take on a Bible passage. His knowledge on the Scripture and his perspectives on life were always insightful and enriched my faith. They also strengthened my courage to face the rest of the week. This book is a must-read over and over. Stewart Lytle, journalist and novelist Gathering each week, we could almost smell the fish and spices from Jesuss breakfast fire. We prayed for Idgie the dog and for a child with cancer. Absorbing Troys poignant lessons, we tasted Jesuss own special sauce. These lessons enriched us; they changed our lives. Phil Oakley, journalist and author Troy Dungans studies are refreshingly creative and biblically on target. I love how he thinks about teaching the Scriptures. He makes me smile, laugh, and reflect on the Scriptures in a very personal way. I cannot help but think, I wish I had thought of it that way. I sat there with him on more than one occasion when he led these studies at Channel 8, and I watched God encourage people through his studies. God has gifted Troy with wonderful creativity and insight of getting to the point. Dr. Harold Habecker, longtime senior pastor of Dallas Bible Church, founder of Finishing Well Ministries

Book Summary:

All parents want the best for their child, and for parents of children with special needs, this can mean that their own well-being is neglected. Drawing from their own experiences of parenting children with special needs, interviews and workshops with parents, and research findings, Nancy J. Whiteman and Linda Roan-Yager explore practical ways in which parents can develop a resilient and positive attitude towards caring for their child with special needs. This book considers the challenges of caring for children with physical, developmental and mental health disorders and proposes methods such as learning to see events through your child's own eyes, celebrating their strengths and achievements and recognising how others can help your child. Chapters deal with key topics such as coping with a diagnosis, discussing support needs with a child's teachers and explaining a child's differences to their peers, and the authors stress the importance of parents building support systems for themselves and their children. Real stories from parents and example scenarios illustrate the common difficulties faced by parents of children with special needs, and the authors explain how painful thoughts may be identified and reframed through techniques grounded in cognitive behaviour therapy. Crucially, Building a Joyful Life warns against parents neglecting their own needs, and a range of exercises to be completed by parents will help them to find ways of regaining balance in their lives.

Not long after she’s placed at a desk in the basement of the off-site St. Paul office, she’s called on to do what she does best: use personal effects found at a crime scene to see through a killer’s eyes. In some cases her sight has been astoundingly accurate; in others it has been less than perfect. The agent in charge of this case, Tony Garcia, aware of Bernadette’s spotty record, is unsure if he should follow her lead, and the tension between them makes for an uneasy alliance. To make things more complicated, she becomes involved with her new upstairs neighbor. Book Summary:

Tortured to insanity by his boss and beaten to a pulp by the cops, Freddy is less than thrilled to discover he's still alive. But you know what they say: When life gives you lemons, stage a violent prison break and wreak havoc on your miserable metropolis. After assembling a team of misfits and miscreants, Freddy goes into business selling weird weapons to the crime bosses of his violent town. ~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~ It struck the ground with an overwhelming boom, a boom that resounded and pounded around their heads?drivers up and down the two blocks clapped their palms over their ears; the urge to squeeze their hands into their skulls was instinct, the fear of what the almighty sound could jar loose was so basic?brains might barf out their eyeballs, ruined childhood fantasies come galloping out of their nostrils. To be that close to an awesome rip in the noisy city, that embodiment of doom?murderer of the very concept of silence?in an instant aural flash?forced one whole column of traffic to burst out weeping. The shockwave. The sonic force of the landing was at such a frequency that it caused upset stomachs, distracted thinking, bloody noses, increased aggression, and sensitivity to light. The tarmac split; broken street folded underneath him, followed by eruptions of dirt. Cars bucked hood-first into the air. Car alarms rang out. The roar was unlike any thunderclap this generation had known in the wild. That sound could swallow everything. That sound punched. It hit. It made every muscle in Sally's body spasm. The Man stepped out of the smoking pit he?d created. In an instant, he was at her window. The silver helmet caught the light. ?ARE YOU HURT?? ?No?no!? she gasped, trying to regain her sight (a part of her knew she could see but her brain just wasn?t getting it). ?ARE YOU OKAY?? The electronic voice crackled at her. ?I?m fine!? she heard herself scream at the window. ?WHERE IS HE?? ?Stop!? she said. ?I don?t know!? She felt him lean down (that is, the entire car rolled towards the shoulder). His sparkling helmet obscured the sun. It loomed over her, its jagged contours dark, outlined in hard angles, the shadow flat, an eclipse. She put her fingers on her forehead and leaned into them, shutting her eyes tight. ?I have a headache,? she said. ?WHERE IS HE?? the speakers demanded again. She whipped off the wheel in a sudden fit. When she spoke, it left her teeth as a hiss and her spittle flecked the glass. She hit the jagged window with a flailing hand but didn?t even feel the pain until later that night when it returned to her as a dull ache. ?I don?t know!? she screamed so loudly her voice cracked. He could see the blood on the seat but Freddy was clearly not there. The cars had begun honking again?not cautiously. ?I don?t know! I don?t know!? she yelled at the window. ?When did he leave?? ?No,? she said flatly. ?Sally.? ?No!? she screamed. ?Go away!? He grabbed the car. The whole frame wobbled on its axles. Wildly, Sally grabbed at the door and seatback for support. She felt the front lift, the steady weightlessness of the two-thousand pound car, and she in it, in the air?suddenly, in the air. The street sank beneath her like it was on an elevator going down; the buildings sank too, riding down the lift; the tops of the apartments, and the grocery store, the parking lot, the endless crooked boulevard stretching away into the thicket of West Opolis. Sally squeezed her thighs together and grabbed at the wheel. "Gordon, I don?t like heights,? she said, trying to keep her voice modulated. Freeways. She realized with horror that she was several thousand feet above the freeways.
