Book Summary:

Although Truman Capote's last novel was unfinished at the time of his death, its surviving portions offer a devastating group portrait of the high and low society of his time. "Prose that makes the heart sing and the narrative fly." —The New York Times Book Review Tracing the career of a writer of uncertain parentage and omnivorous erotic tastes, Answered Prayers careens from a louche bar in Tangiers to a banquette at La Côte Basque, from literary salons to high-priced whorehouses. It takes in calculating beauties and sadistic husbands along with such real-life supporting characters as Colette, the Duchess of Windsor, Montgomery Clift, and Tallulah Bankhead. Above all, this malevolently finny book displays Capote at his most relentlessly observant and murderously witty.

Book Summary:

Penguin Classics e-books give you the best possible editions of Charles Dickens's novels, including all the original illustrations, useful and informative introductions, the definitive, accurate text as it was meant to be published, a chronology of Dickens's life and notes that fill in the background to the book. Dickens's story of solitary miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is taught the true meaning of Christmas by a series of ghostly visitors, has proved one of his most well-loved works. Ever since it was published in 1843 it has had an enduring influence on the way we think about the traditions of Christmas. Dickens's other Christmas writings collected here include 'The Story of the Goblins who Stole a Sexton', the short story from The Pickwick Papers on which A Christmas Carol was based; The Haunted Man, a tale of a man tormented by painful memories; along with shorter pieces, some drawn from the 'Christmas Stories' that Dickens wrote annually for his weekly journals. In all of them Dickens celebrates the season as one of geniality, charity and remembrance.

Book Summary:

Arvid Falk is a young and idealistic government worker who always wanted to be a poet. When a journalist writes a newspaper exposé based on Arvid’s stories about his useless government department, Arvid is fired immediately. Starting afresh he sets out to explore every corner of the Swedish society, and the hypocrisy and corruption he finds shocks him. Walking the streets of Stockholm will never be the same again once this novel gets under your skin. Named the first modern Swedish novel, ‘The Red Room’ (1879) is wonderfully insightful and ironic. The Charles Dickens influence is undeniable and Strindberg’s writing has been rightfully compared to that of Henrik Ibsen as well. August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a world-famous Swedish playwright, who, in Sweden, was known for his novels, poems, essays and paintings as well. Along with Henrik Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard and Selma Lagerlöf he is one of the all-time most influential authors of Scandinavia.

Book Summary:

In this exceptional cultural history, Atlantic Senior Editor Ronald Brownstein—“one of America's best political journalists (The Economist)—tells the kaleidoscopic story of one monumental year that marked the city of Los Angeles’ creative peak, a glittering moment when popular culture was ahead of politics in predicting what America would become. Los Angeles in 1974 exerted more influence over popular culture than any other city in America. Los Angeles that year, in fact, dominated popular culture more than it ever had before, or would again. Working in film, recording, and television studios around Sunset Boulevard, living in Brentwood and Beverly Hills or amid the flickering lights of the Hollywood Hills, a cluster of transformative talents produced an explosion in popular culture which reflected the demographic, social, and cultural realities of a changing America. At a time when Richard Nixon won two presidential elections with a message of backlash against the social changes unleashed by the sixties, popular culture was ahead of politics in predicting what America would become. The early 1970s in Los Angeles was the time and the place where conservatives definitively lost the battle to control popular culture. Rock Me on the Water traces the confluence of movies, music, television, and politics in Los Angeles month by month through that transformative, magical year. Ronald Brownstein reveals how 1974 represented a confrontation between a massive younger generation intent on change, and a political order rooted in the status quo. Today, we are again witnessing a generational cultural divide. Brownstein shows how the voices resistant to change may win the political battle for a time, but they cannot hold back the future.

Lo and Behold came into being as the result of being awakened during the night and feeling nudged by the Holy Spirit to write down what came to me. The story simply wrote itself as it flowed out of my pen, and I was amazed at the result! The name came from my father-in-law, telling me with tongue in cheek Lo and Behold were the two most famous angels in Scripture since it was written many times: "Lo, the angel of the Lord" and "Behold, the angel of the Lord." I dedicate this book in his memory and in honor of my grandchildren.

Book Summary:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Christmas Box and the Noel Collection comes A Christmas Memory, a poignant, deeply felt novel about loss, grief, the healing power of forgiveness, and the true meaning of the holiday season. It’s 1967, and for young Richard it’s a time of heartbreak and turmoil. Over the span of a few months, his brother, Mark, is killed in Vietnam; his father loses his job and moves the family from California to his grandmother’s abandoned home in Utah; and his parents make the painful decision to separate. With uncertainty rattling every corner of his life, Richard does his best to remain strong—but when he’s run down by bullies at his new school, he meets Mr. Foster, an elderly neighbor who chases off the bullies and invites Richard in for a cup of cocoa. Richard becomes fast friends with the wise, solitary man who inspires Richard’s love for books and whose dog, Gollum, becomes his closest companion. As the holidays approach, the joy and light of Christmas seem unlikely to permeate the Evans home as things take a grim turn for the worse. And just when it seems like he has nothing left to lose, Richard is confronted by a startling revelation. But with Mr. Foster’s wisdom and kindness, he learns for the first time what truly matters about the spirit of the season: that forgiveness can heal even the deepest wounds, and love endures long after the pain of loss subsides. In A Christmas Memory, Richard Paul Evans (#1 New York Times bestselling author and the “King of Christmas fiction”) delves deep into his childhood memories to take readers back to an age when his world felt like it was falling apart, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, the light of hope can still shine.

  • Pages : 160
  • Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Summary:

Jimmy Carter remembers Christmas in Plains, Georgia, the source of spiritual strength, respite, friendship, and vacation fun in this charming portrait. In a beautifully rendered portrait, Jimmy Carter remembers the Christmas days of his Plains boyhood—the simplicity of family and community gift-giving, his father’s eggnog, the children’s house decorations, the school Nativity pageant, the fireworks, Luke’s story of the birth of Christ, and the poignancy of his black neighbors’ poverty. Later, away at Annapolis, he always went home to Plains, and during his Navy years, when he and Rosalynn were raising their young family, they spent their Christmases together recreating for their children the holiday festivities of their youth. Since the Carters returned home to Plains for good, they have always been there on Christmas Day, with only one exception in forty-eight years: In 1980, with Americans held hostage in Iran, Jimmy, Rosalynn, and Amy went by themselves to Camp David, where they felt lonely. Amy suggested that they invite the White House staff and their families to join them and to celebrate. Nowadays the Carters’ large family is still together at Christmastime, offering each other the gifts and the lifelong rituals that mark this day for them. With the novelist’s eye that enchanted readers of his memoir An Hour Before Daylight, Jimmy Carter has written another American classic, in the tradition of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory and Dylan Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales.

And we meet Capote himself, who, whether he is smoking with his cleaning lady or trading sexual gossip with Marilyn Monroe, remains one of the most elegant, malicious, yet compassionate writers to train his eye on the social fauna of his time.

Book Summary:

My memories of Christmas were just as fond. Both of my parents were from South Arkansas, several hours away, so our immediate family would have our Christmas early on Christmas Eve morning, then we would load up the station wagon and drive to Hot Springs and Malvern that day to see our family. We had a Christmas Eve get-together every year at my aunts house in Malvern that night, and it seemed like there were hundreds of people there (although there were probably only forty to fifty). There was Christmas music, presents, food, and lots of fun. The family holiday tour didnt stop thereafter the Christmas Eve party, we would then drive to Fordyce (about an hour away) and stay with my grandmother Maxine. We would usually roll into town about one in the morning, but she was ready for us, armed with an amazing coconut cake I will never forget. The taste and texture of the delicious cake is a pleasant part of my Christmas memory. We had another Christmas event the next morning at her house, in another part of small-town America. It was all a whirlwind of events, but a tradition that I cherished. Although there was lots of family throughout my childhood memories of Christmas, there was one thing that was not a part of the family ritualsI dont recall the story of Christ being present in our home at Christmas. Debbie and I made a concerted effort to make sure our three children understood and treasured the story of Jesuss birth and ultimate death as part of their Christmas memories. The story of Christmas is a true love storythe love that God shared with all of us. God sent his Son to be born and walk among us in order that we may have life abundant. We should never miss that part of Christmas as well. I hope this book helps bring that tradition to your family in some small way. We hope this book will help you create those Christmas memories as well.

Book Summary:

Holly Golightly knows that nothing bad can ever happen to you at Tiffany's. In this seductive, wistful masterpiece, Capote created a woman whose name has entered the American idiom and whose style is a part of the literary landscape—her poignancy, wit, and naïveté continue to charm. This volume also includes three of Capote's best-known stories, “House of Flowers,” “A Diamond Guitar,” and “A Christmas Memory,” which the Saturday Review called “one of the most moving stories in our language.” It is a tale of two innocents—a small boy and the old woman who is his best friend—whose sweetness contains a hard, sharp kernel of truth.

In A Christmas Anthology, the author gives us a look at Christmas and how the holiday can change those who experience it. In Another Silent Night, Frank and Debbie Marks look to spend another lonely Christmas, like the ones they have had since a terrible tragedy. But then, a young family enters their lives and changes this Christmas for them. In A Christmas Editorial, Kevin Pritchard is a cynical young newspaper reporter getting ready to write the most important piece he has ever done. How can he write anything uplifting in his negative state? But then he meets a young boy named Billy who changes his whole Christmas spirit. In Christmas Eve, a story written in first person, a long-AWOL father, a dying grandmother, and a traditional Christmas Eve family get-together provide the backdrop for a modern story of the Prodigal Son. In Another Quiet Night . . . , a quiet, cold Christmas Eve in New York City is the backdrop for this story that throws the lives of several people from different backgrounds together to bring about a memorable Christmas. And finally, there is a different story that is very personal to the author. It is a story about a car and a father and a decision the author makes that becomes a very satisfying Christmas in My Dads New Car.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The most famous true crime novel of all time "chills the blood and exercises the intelligence" (The New York Review of Books)—and haunted its author long after he finished writing it. On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. In one of the first non-fiction novels ever written, Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, generating both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. Book Summary:

The song “The 12 Days of Christmas” is a mainstay of the holiday season, but the practice of celebrating Christmas as a twelve-day festival fell out of fashion long ago in most cultures. In Celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas, author Chris Marchand explores the history behind the season and individual feast days from December 25 to January 6, and then offers suggestions for how you can celebrate it with your family, church, or community. Along with this, he provides answers to many of the nagging questions surrounding the holiday, such as the history behind the twelve-days song, why December 25 was chosen as the date, and what to do about its supposedly pagan origins. The challenge before us is to first help people see Christmas as a holiday that begins, rather than ends, on December 25, and then to together figure out how to reinvent Christmas in the present by learning how it was celebrated in the past.
